Cosplay is a term used for "costume play"; people dress up as the fictional character of their choice, be it from anime, science fiction, fantasy, etc., and act them out, all in the spirit of fun. Cosplay is primarily a Japanese invention, stemmed from the popularity of anime (Japanese animation) in that country.

Cosplay is more than just wearing a costume; cosplayers are quite often enthusiastic about this hobby, and actually get into the spirit of the characters they portray. Most tend to cosplay characters that they resemble in physical appearance - although there have been more than just a few cases where enthusiasm for cosplaying a favorite character overrides the desire to portray characters with more similarities in build and features. :D
